Hooghly
Women’s College is a glorious milestone in the history of education of women
not only in Hooghly district but also in the state of West Bengal. It is the
sixth academic institution in the district and is the first Women College of Burdwan University. Some local educationists and social
reformists made an active endeavor to set up Hooghly Women’s College to cater
education for women. After a long journey, now the college library is ready to
expose its resources with modern equipments to its user community for their
academic development.
The objective
of the library is to establish itself in such a way that it cannot work as a building stacked with books. It is also a repository and source of
information and ideas, a place for learning and enquiry, and for the generation
of thought and the creation of new knowledge. Therefore library is a learning
resource center of the institution. It is a storehouse of universal knowledge
and laboratory of modern theory and ideas.
The college maintains a resourceful
well equipped library with a well furnished and specious reading room. The
college library system comprises of the Central Library of about 335 sq. mts. And 17 departmental libraries of varying sizes. The
Central Library is housed in a two-storied building in the campus. The main

related news and magazines and 20 journals/periodicals. Now our college library
is a member of N-LIST programme under INFLIBNET

Book Selection & Acquisition: Head of each
department prepares a list of books in consultation with the other faculty
members of the department and places requisition to library. After submitting
those lists in the library, library sub-committee allocates budget for each
department. After taking decision in the library sub-committee, orders are
placed to selected book suppliers. Hence the teachers take active part in
collection of books.

Conservation and Preservation of
Library Documents
Conservation has two
aspects: preservation and restoration. Both of them are complimentary to each
other. Preservation is a wider perspective and includes such activities as
storage, handling, disinfecting etc. In a nutshell, preservation is any action
taken to prevent or retard deterioration. Restoration is any surgical operation
requiring repairing and strengthening of the documents. Under the process of
restoration, library used only book binding process to strengthen its
materials.
Pest Control: Library started pest control from time to time to prevent library
document from further damage with the help of professionals (Pest Control
Management Service) in regular way.
